Kids can ask many questions about the universe, and this build-your-own model will help them get answers. A fun do-together project for parents and younger children; older kids can assemble it themselves—science project, anyone?

Your astronomers can move the planets to make them revolve around the glowing sun. The unit also projects a map of the night sky onto the ceiling (projects in any location but best when placed in the center of the room).

Components: base station; nine plastic, painted planets; sun; nine orbit rods; transparent star map; 35 x 23-inch color poster; detailed instructions written by a Smithsonian curator.

Dimensions: 12 x 15 x 3 inches. Requires 4 AA batteries; not included.

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD—contains small parts and small balls. Not for children under 3 years.

Pros:
  • Projection
Cons:
  • Not automatic
  • Has to be in center of room
I was expecting the planets to move electronically. But all in all I was pleased with the set-up. It was bought for a Christmas present for my 7 year old grand daughter. Also I liked the star displays it projected to the ceiling, but to get the whole picture the planetarium would have to be in the center of the room. This is not a possibility in her small room.
